Frequently Asked Questions

  • The answer will depend on where you plan to recycle your items.

For the District’s Recycling Centers, you can find a detailed list of accepted and unaccepted materials with examples here, plus a printable home guide you can view and download here.

For Curbside services, it will depend entirely on your service provider. You can check our Waste Sorting Guides to see if your provider has a web page or printable guide listed, and if not, you can contact them directly for details.

  • The destination will always depend on the item.

Check out the Recycling and Disposal Center page for the full range of materials and items that are accepted by the District’s Recycling Centers. It includes compost, trash, recycling, and household hazardous waste options, as well as recommendations for handling items that are not accepted by the District but can be processed by other organizations, like yard waste.

  • No, we do not rent dumpsters but you may rent one through a local private trash removal company.

  • As with everything, it depends on the material. In short:

    Trash:

When the compactor is filled to capacity, it is rolled onto a truck and brought to the Hoosier Disposal Transfer Station. There, it is transferred to a larger hauler with waste from other sources and trucked to the Republic Services Sycamore Ridge Landfill in Terre Haute for final disposal.

    Recyclables:

When a particular material’s compactor is filled to capacity, it is rolled onto a truck and delivered to the Hoosier Disposal Transfer Station. There, they combine the load with other like materials, and either deliver it to additional facilities for further processing, or broker deals with industrial partners who purchase the material for use in manufacturing.

    Hazardous Waste:

The district works with a variety of organizations that are specialized in handling different types of hazardous materials and provides the materials it collects to these organizations for processing.
